This second volume begins with the dawn of the eighteenth century, and relates how the Congregation of the Mission, founded by St. Vincent de Paul, worked to remain faithful to his vision while adapting itself to the demands of ecclesiastical and political life in France, Italy, Poland, Spain, and Portugal, overseas missions in North Africa and the Mascarenes, as well as the missions taken up after the suppression of the Jesuits in the Middle East and China. Among other problems, the Missioners found themselves in the middle of fights over Jansenism, but tempered by the success of the canonization of Saint Vincent de Paul. This is an important, down-to-earth side of history not often told.

Volume 2 was written by Luigi Mezzadri, C.M., Francesca Onnis, and John E. Rybolt, C.M., with the help of Juan Julián Díaz Catalán, C.M., Wladyslaw Bomba, C.M., and Jan Dukala, C.M. Luigi Mezzadri is the author of numerous books and studies on the history of the Church and spirituality. He is professor of Church history at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Dr. Onnis received her formation in modern history. John Rybolt did his advanced studies in Sacred Scripture and has published numerous books and studies on Saint Vincent de Paul and the Congregation of the Mission. Fathers Díaz Catalán, Bomba and Dukala all contributed significant materials on the history of the Congregation Spain and Poland during the eighteenth century.
